Agarwood Farming in India 2026
Source of precious oud resin, but value depends on successful inoculation and legal permits.

Overview
Agarwood (mainly Aquilaria malaccensis) is the source of oud, one of the world's most expensive aromatic resins, used in perfumery and incense. The fragrant resin forms only when the tree is wounded and infected, so commercial growers artificially inoculate trees, usually after 5 to 7 years of growth, to trigger resin formation. This is grown widely in Northeast India, especially Assam and Tripura, where state agarwood policies encourage farmers. Be realistic: resin yield is uncertain, depends on inoculation success, species and climate, and quality varies greatly. The species is listed under CITES Appendix II, and while CITES eased export rules for cultivated agarwood in 2023, cutting, transport and sale still require a transit permit from the state forest department. Done well with reliable inoculation and a buyer network, agarwood can be very rewarding, but it is a specialised, patience heavy crop with variable results.
Climate
Warm, humid tropical climate with high rainfall, typically 1500 mm and above, and temperatures around 20 to 33 degrees Celsius. Suited to the high humidity of Northeast India. Needs partial shade when young.
Soil
Well drained, fertile sandy loam to loam with good organic matter, pH around 4.5 to 6.5. Tolerates slightly acidic soils common in the Northeast. Avoid waterlogging.
Planting & Spacing
Spacing of about 8 ft x 8 ft to 10 ft x 10 ft is common, giving roughly 450 to 680 trees per acre. Higher density is sometimes used since not all trees yield equally after inoculation. Plant healthy nursery saplings in the monsoon and protect young plants with some shade.
Varieties
Aquilaria malaccensis is the main cultivated species in India; Aquilaria khasiana also occurs. Planting material is seedling raised. The bigger choice is the inoculation method, ranging from mechanical wounding to fungal or microbial inoculants, which strongly affects resin yield.
Care & Management
Weed and water young trees, give balanced nutrition, and maintain healthy growth until inoculation age. Inoculation is the key operation; use a proven method and skilled help. After inoculation, allow one to several years for resin to build before harvest.
Pests & Diseases
Watch for stem borers, defoliating caterpillars and root rot in waterlogged soil. Healthy, well drained plantations face fewer issues. The main practical challenge is inconsistent resin formation rather than pests.
Yield & Harvest
Trees are inoculated after about 5 to 7 years and resin-bearing wood is typically harvested a year or more later, so total time often runs well beyond 7 to 10 years. Value lies in resin rich wood and distilled oud oil, both of which fetch very high but highly variable prices depending on grade. Confirm transit permit rules before harvest.
Cost & Profit
Returns can be high if inoculation succeeds and quality is good, but yield and grade are uncertain and prices vary enormously. Capital is locked for many years and not every tree pays off. Plan conservatively, line up buyers, and treat headline profit figures with strong caution.
These are indicative ranges. Actual cost and income vary by region, market and management, so verify locally.
Market & Demand
Buyers include perfume and oud oil distillers, incense makers, and exporters to West Asia and East Asia. The Northeast has clusters of traders and distillation units. Build buyer links early since quality grading strongly affects price.
Subsidy & Support
States like Assam and Tripura have agarwood policies to encourage cultivation, and the Sub-Mission on Agroforestry (SMAF) can support quality planting material in states with relaxed transit rules. CITES eased export of cultivated agarwood in 2023, but you still need a transit permit from the forest department to cut, move and sell. Verify current state policy and permits before planting and harvest.
