Nano DAP is a liquid fertiliser with 8% nitrogen and 16% phosphate (P2O5) by volume. IFFCO sells it at ₹600 for 500 ml and ₹350 for 250 ml (price list effective 1 January 2025), against ₹1,350 for a 50 kg bag of DAP. It is used as a seed treatment, a seedling root dip and a leaf spray.
At launch it was presented as one bottle in place of one bag. IFFCO's website now says a bottle can potentially replace 50% of the phosphorus from DAP. A two-year Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) trial on wheat found 16.1% lower yield when nano DAP sprays were used with no DAP in the soil.
What it is and what it costs
- Composition: nitrogen 8.0% and phosphorus 16.0% as P2O5, weight by volume. IFFCO says Nano DAP (liquid) was notified under the Fertiliser Control Order on 2 March 2023.
- Nutrient arithmetic: 500 ml holds 500 x 0.08 = 40 g nitrogen and 500 x 0.16 = 80 g P2O5. A 50 kg bag of DAP (18:46:0) holds 9 kg nitrogen and 23 kg P2O5. The bottle works by delivery through seed and leaf, not by matching the amount.
- Makers: three companies hold permission to make nano DAP: IFFCO, Coromandel International and Zuari Farm Hub.
| Product | Pack | MRP incl. GST | Source and date |
|---|---|---|---|
| IFFCO Nano DAP | 500 ml | ₹600 | IFFCO price list, 1 January 2025 |
| IFFCO Nano DAP | 250 ml | ₹350 | IFFCO price list, 1 January 2025 |
| DAP, for comparison | 50 kg bag | ₹1,350 | IFFCO price list, 1 January 2025 |
The 250 ml pack costs ₹1.40 per ml and the 500 ml pack ₹1.20 per ml, so the larger bottle is cheaper per ml.
Label dose and how to use it
These are the directions on IFFCO's Nano DAP site. The dose depends on seed size, seed weight and crop.
- Seed treatment: 3 to 5 ml per kg of seed, in enough water to form a thin film on the seed. Leave for 20 to 30 minutes, dry in shade, then sow.
- Seedling, tuber or sett treatment: 3 to 5 ml per litre of water. Dip the roots, tubers or setts for 20 to 30 minutes, dry in shade, then transplant.
- Foliar spray: 2 to 4 ml per litre of water at the good foliage stage (tillering or branching).
- Second spray: at pre-flowering or late tillering, for crops that need a lot of phosphorus and for long-duration crops.
A news explainer on the launch gives 250 to 500 ml per acre per spray. At 4 ml per litre, 500 ml makes 125 litres of spray. IFFCO says seed or root treatment followed by one to two sprays can cut conventional DAP by 50 to 75%.
What the maker claims
- At the launch (reported by The Tribune and Drishti IAS) one 500 ml bottle was described as equal to one 50 kg bag of DAP, at ₹600 against ₹1,350.
- IFFCO's Nano DAP site now says one bottle can potentially replace the phosphorus requirement met by DAP by 50%, and lists farmer and KVK testimonials. Those testimonials are not published trial data.
- The site says nutrient use efficiency exceeds 90% under ideal conditions; the figure is the maker's, with no trial attached on that page.
What independent evaluations found
- PAU Ludhiana, 2022-23: scientists Rajeev Sikka, Jeevanjot Dhaliwal and Mandeep Kaur tested foliar nano DAP (a Coromandel product) on wheat in 12 treatment combinations. With two nano DAP sprays and no recommended phosphorus, grain yield was 47.61 quintals per hectare against 56.75 with conventional DAP, a fall of 16.1%. Nitrogen and phosphorus uptake was 17.58 kg per hectare against 26.60. Yield was almost the same when the full recommended phosphorus was given along with two sprays.
- Reading the PAU result fairly: it is one crop at one research farm, on one company's product, and Down To Earth's report carries no IFFCO response. It does show that sprays alone did not make up for no phosphorus in the soil in that trial.
- Parliamentary committee: its March 2023 report noted that IFFCO had run nano DAP trials in Kharif 2021 on 10 crops at 34 locations in 20 states, and that the results had not been submitted to the Government of India for evaluation at that time.
- Sales: Outlook Business (December 2025) reported 65 lakh bottles of nano DAP sold that year against an 8 crore target for nano fertilisers.
No ICAR or state university trial supporting the one-bottle-one-bag claim is cited here.
Tank mix and drones
- An IFFCO-sourced article says Nano Urea Plus can be combined with Nano DAP, water-soluble fertilisers and a biostimulant, with a jar test before mixing with other agrochemicals. Check the label for compatibility details before mixing.
- No official drone dose, water volume or flight setting for nano DAP is cited here. The parliamentary committee noted a farm drone costs about ₹10 lakh.
Before replacing DAP
- Check the phosphorus level on the Soil Health Card. A field low in phosphorus is where a shortfall would show first.
- Try it on a strip, keep a strip with the usual DAP basal dose, and compare yield at harvest.
- Work out total nutrients with the fertilizer calculator, and see fertilizer prices and availability if DAP is scarce.
