Carrot (Daucus carota) is a root vegetable whose marketable produce is the swollen taproot, so nutrition must build a long, smooth, well-coloured root rather than excess leaf. Potassium is the key nutrient, as it drives root size, colour and sweetness, while balanced nitrogen supports early canopy without making the tops too leafy. Phosphorus helps root development in the early stage. Carrot grows best in deep, loose, stone-free soil rich in organic matter, but the manure must be well-rotted, because fresh or lumpy manure causes forking and hairy, misshapen roots. Timely splitting of nitrogen and potash through growth keeps roots filling evenly. Always base your fertiliser plan on a Soil Health Card soil test and confirm the exact dose with your local KVK, since soil type strongly changes the requirement.

Recommended NPK dose for Carrot

A common recommendation is about 40 to 60 kg nitrogen, 25 to 50 kg phosphorus and 50 to 110 kg potash per hectare, which is roughly 16 to 25 kg N, 10 to 20 kg P and 20 to 45 kg K per acre. Carrot needs comparatively high potash for root colour and size, so potash is often the largest dose. The manure must be fully decomposed and free of lumps, as fresh or coarse manure makes roots fork and become hairy. Vermicompost at 4 to 5 tonnes per hectare is an excellent alternative that gives smooth, well-coloured roots. Biofertilisers such as Azotobacter and phosphate-solubilising bacteria improve nutrient uptake and root quality.

Boron deficiency causes cracking, a rough cankered surface and poorly coloured roots, and badly affected leaves grow in a rose-like cluster with orange older leaves. Correct it only when a soil test confirms a shortage, as excess boron is toxic. Zinc deficiency causes yellowing between veins and stunting, helped by zinc sulphate. Avoid over-liming, which can lock up boron and manganese. Use micronutrients strictly on the basis of soil test results.
