Overview

Bajra or pearl millet is a hardy, drought-tolerant kharif cereal grown mainly in dry regions of Rajasthan, Gujarat, Haryana and Maharashtra. It gives a good response to modest, well-timed fertiliser even in poor sandy soils, but heavy doses are wasted in rainfed conditions where moisture is the real limit. Nitrogen is split between sowing and an early top-dressing, while phosphorus and potash go in fully at sowing. Hybrids respond to more fertiliser than local composites. Sandy bajra soils are often short of zinc and sometimes iron. ICAR and State Agricultural Universities give a clear N:P:K range for hybrids and composites. Use the figures below as a guide and adjust them to rainfed or irrigated conditions and to your Soil Health Card or soil test and local KVK.

Recommended NPK dose for Bajra (Pearl Millet)

A common ICAR range for hybrid bajra is about 80 to 100 kg N, 40 to 50 kg P2O5 and 40 kg K2O per hectare, which is roughly 32 to 40 kg N, 16 to 20 kg P2O5 and 16 kg K2O per acre. Composite and local varieties and rainfed crops need less, around 40 to 60 kg N per hectare. In fertiliser terms per hectare a hybrid dose is about 90 to 110 kg DAP plus 130 to 170 kg urea plus 67 kg MOP, or per acre about 36 to 44 kg DAP plus 53 to 69 kg urea plus 27 kg MOP. Reduce urea where DAP supplies part of the nitrogen. These are general ranges only. Always adjust to your Soil Health Card or a fresh soil test and confirm with your local KVK.

Application schedule

Apply full phosphorus, full potash and about half the nitrogen as basal at sowing, placed near the seed. Give the remaining nitrogen as a top-dressing at the active tillering stage, about 25 to 30 days after sowing, ideally just before a rain or irrigation so it dissolves and reaches the roots. In good moisture and with hybrids, a three-way nitrogen split gives a small extra benefit. In purely rainfed fields where rain is uncertain, keep nitrogen modest and apply the top-dressing only if the crop and moisture justify it.

Organic & bio-fertilizers

Mix 5 to 10 tonnes of well-rotted farmyard manure or compost per hectare into the soil before sowing, about 2 to 4 tonnes per acre, which is especially valuable in sandy bajra soils for holding moisture. Vermicompost at 1.5 to 2.5 tonnes per hectare is a good alternative. Treat seed with Azospirillum and PSB biofertilisers to add nitrogen and free up phosphorus. Because bajra is grown in dry, low-fertility soils, building up organic matter year after year greatly improves both moisture holding and the response to any fertiliser you apply.

Micronutrients & deficiency signs

Zinc deficiency is common in the sandy soils where bajra grows. It shows as yellowing between the veins and small brown spots on middle and lower leaves, with stunted plants. Apply about 20 to 25 kg zinc sulphate per hectare, roughly 8 to 10 kg per acre, at sowing where the soil test confirms it, or correct quickly with a foliar spray. Iron deficiency, seen as yellowing of new leaves while veins stay green, occurs in alkaline and calcareous soils and is best corrected by spraying. Sulphur is rarely the main limit but helps grain quality in light soils.

Tips & cautions

Match fertiliser to moisture: in rainfed bajra, do not spend on heavy doses that the crop cannot use without water. Split nitrogen into a basal and one top-dressing timed with rain or irrigation. Prefer neem-coated urea for better efficiency in sandy soils where nitrogen leaches fast. Place phosphorus near the seed rather than broadcasting. Do not overuse urea, as excess in low-moisture fields is simply lost and can scorch young plants. Build soil organic matter every year, and always follow your Soil Health Card.
