Sowing time is near but the rain is very late this year. If the monsoon is delayed by three to four weeks, what should I plan for?

If the monsoon is delayed by three to four weeks, shift to shorter duration and more drought tolerant crops and varieties so the crop still matures within the remaining season. For example, switch from long duration crops to short duration pulses like moong or urad, short duration bajra or other quick maturing options suited to your region, and choose contingency varieties recommended by your state. Keep seed of an alternate crop ready before the season, do not sow on insufficient first showers that can cause germination failure, and conserve every bit of soil moisture with timely tillage and mulching. State agriculture departments and KVKs publish district level contingency plans for exactly this situation, so get your district's delayed monsoon plan and keep alternate seed on hand.

Buy your backup seed early, before the season, not when the rain finally comes. The year monsoon was very late, short duration moong and bajra seed sold out fast in our market and prices shot up. Those who had kept seed ready switched smoothly; the rest scrambled. Keep alternate seed on hand in advance.

The year monsoon came very late I kept short duration moong seed ready and switched part of my land to it instead of waiting for my usual long crop. It matured in the shorter window and saved some income. Keeping alternate seed on hand is the real lesson.

Mulching and timely tillage to hold soil moisture helped me a lot in a late year. I covered the soil and worked it to break the crust so the little rain we got soaked in instead of running off. Conserving every bit of moisture buys your short duration crop a better start.

I learned not to sow on the first light showers in a delayed year, because a dry spell after that killed my germination once. Wait for adequate moisture and pick a shorter, hardier variety. Your district contingency plan from the KVK lists the right options.

Spread your risk by not putting everything into one crop in a late year. I split my land between a short duration pulse and a hardy millet, so if one struggled the other carried some income. Intercropping a cereal with a pulse did the same for a neighbour. Do not gamble the whole field on the rain turning good.
