How do I calculate the right rotavator width for my tractor PTO HP?

I have a 45 HP tractor and a dealer is pushing a 7 foot rotavator. How do I know what width my tractor can actually pull?

As a thumb rule a rotavator needs roughly 1.5 to 2 HP of PTO power per foot of working width, and in heavy soil go to the higher end. For a 45 HP tractor (PTO is usually around 80 to 85 percent of engine HP, so about 36 to 38 HP at the shaft) a 5 to 6 foot rotavator is a safe match; a 7 foot will overload it in firm or wet soil, slow you down and burn extra diesel. Always match to your widest typical soil condition, not the easiest. Check the rotavator maker's recommended HP range printed on the unit, and confirm your soil type with the dealer before buying.

I have 47 HP and run a 6 foot rotavator in loam, perfect. Tried a borrowed 7 foot once in wet field and the tractor bogged down. Stick to 5 to 6 foot for around 45 HP.

I run a custom hiring rotavator and farmers with 45 to 50 HP tractors always do better with a 5 or 6 foot unit. The 7 foot owners keep coming back complaining of poor tilth in hard soil. Buy the width your tractor pulls comfortably even in your worst field, not the biggest one the dealer wants to sell.

One angle to think about: if you only need a 7 foot once in a while for a big job, hire it instead of buying. I kept my 6 foot for daily work and hire a wider one on the rare occasion. Cheaper than overloading my own tractor and wearing out the clutch.
