I keep hearing about NLM for livestock entrepreneurs. What does it actually fund and how do I apply?

The National Livestock Mission (NLM) supports entrepreneurship in poultry, sheep, goat, piggery and feed and fodder development, mainly through capital subsidy for setting up breeding and rearing units and fodder enterprises. The subsidy is generally given as a share of the project cost up to a ceiling, and it usually comes after you set up the unit, often linked to a bank loan, rather than as cash in advance. Exact eligibility, project sizes and subsidy amounts change with the guidelines, so confirm current details with your state animal husbandry department or the NLM portal. You typically need a project report, land or shed, your own or bank financed share, and the relevant registrations. Because the subsidy is performance and project linked, plan a realistic, bankable proposal and get the unit running well, since the support follows the investment.
A solid bankable project report was the key step in my case, that is what the bank and department actually act on. I got help preparing it rather than submitting something rough, and the process moved much faster. Confirm the current subsidy figures with the department, do not rely on old numbers people quote.
The subsidy in my experience came after the unit was set up and verified, linked to my bank loan, not as money upfront. So you need to arrange the initial funding yourself or through the loan first. Plan a unit size you can genuinely run, because the support follows a working unit, not a paper plan.
