How should I design a cattle shed for hot climate to keep cows cool?

For a hot climate, build the shed long axis running east to west so the sun does not beat into the resting area, and keep the roof high for hot air to rise and escape. Open sides with adequate space per animal give good cross ventilation, and a ridge vent or raised roof centre helps heat leave. Use a heat reflecting or insulated roof and provide shade trees around the shed. A clean, non slip, well drained floor with a gentle slope keeps it dry and reduces leg and udder problems, and a separate paved area with a slope toward a drain makes cleaning easier. Provide plenty of clean drinking water and, in extreme heat, fans and sprinklers or foggers for cooling. Plan enough manger and standing space so animals are not crowded.

East-west orientation and a high roof made a big difference in our shed. We added fans for the peak summer weeks and the cows eat better and give more milk when they are not heat stressed.

Do not underestimate water access. In our heat the cows drink huge amounts, so I put extra water troughs and keep them clean and full all day. A shaded trough that does not heat up encourages them to drink more, which keeps milk steady in summer.

Plant a few fast growing shade trees on the south and west sides early, they cost almost nothing and cut the heat hitting the shed for years. I also painted my roof with a reflective white coat which lowered the inside temperature noticeably on hot afternoons.

Floor slope and drainage are easy to get wrong and hard to fix later. Ours did not drain well at first and the wet floor caused foot trouble and made the shed hot and smelly. We redid it with a gentle slope to a drain and a slightly rough non slip finish, and the animals are far more comfortable.

Foggers and fans together work much better than fans alone in our dry heat, but only run the foggers in the hottest hours or the floor stays wet too long. The cows that used to pant and go off feed in the afternoon now keep eating. Just make sure the wiring is safe and the floor still drains after fogging.
