My drip system pressure is uneven, far plants get less water, how do I fix it?

Uneven drip pressure and flow, pressure compensating emitters, lateral length, pump and filter check.

If plants near the pump get plenty of water but far end plants get little, the system likely has a pressure or flow problem along the laterals. Common causes are laterals that are too long for the emitter type, partly clogged filters or emitters, a pump or pressure that is too low, or undersized main and sub main pipes. Fixes include cleaning or replacing filters, flushing the lines, shortening overly long laterals or splitting the field into smaller irrigation blocks (zones) run one at a time, and checking pump output and pressure. Using pressure compensating emitters gives even discharge over a range of pressure and along longer laterals, which helps on undulating land. For a lasting fix, get the hydraulic design checked by a micro irrigation agency or your KVK rather than just adding pressure.

Check the simple things first before blaming the design. My far end was weak because the filter was half choked and the lateral ends had never been flushed, so silt had built up. After cleaning the filter and flushing the lines the far plants got proper flow again. Start with filters and flushing.

Splitting my field into smaller zones and running them one at a time fixed my uneven watering. I was trying to run too many laterals at once and the pressure could not reach the far ends. With smaller blocks each section gets full pressure. It takes a bit longer but everything waters evenly.

On my sloping land pressure compensating emitters were the real solution, because ordinary emitters gave more water downhill and less uphill. The PC emitters keep the discharge even along the whole line and across the slope. They cost a bit more but on undulating ground they are worth it.
