It is better not to place zinc sulphate and DAP or other phosphate fertiliser in close contact in the same band, because high phosphate can react with zinc and reduce its availability, which is one reason zinc deficiency shows up in heavily phosphate fertilised fields. Practical options are to broadcast and mix zinc into the soil separately before or at sowing rather than banding it with DAP, or to apply a foliar zinc sulphate spray during the crop if a deficiency appears. Apply zinc only when your soil test shows it is low, and a single soil dose usually carries over for 2 to 3 crops. Keep micronutrient and phosphate placement separate where you can. Confirm the dose and method against your Soil Health Card and KVK; do not over apply.

I broadcast the zinc across the field and mix it in, and put the DAP in the furrow, so they are never sitting together. Earlier I mixed both in the same furrow and still saw zinc deficiency despite applying zinc, which is exactly the reaction the team is describing. Separating them sorted it.

If you forgot to apply zinc at sowing, do not panic and dig it in next to the DAP. Just give a foliar zinc sulphate spray when you see the deficiency in the standing crop. I have rescued crops that way and it works fine as a catch up without disturbing the placement.

Only apply zinc if your soil test actually shows it low, and remember one good soil dose lasts two or three crops. A neighbour kept adding zinc every single season out of habit and the crop did not benefit from the extra. Test, dose once properly, then skip a couple of crops.
