Reddish water that stains is usually high in dissolved iron, which is generally not toxic to most crops at moderate levels but causes two practical problems: it clogs drip emitters with reddish brown deposits and can stain fruit and produce. The standard fix is aeration: pump the water into an open tank or spray it so iron oxidises and settles out, then draw the cleaner water from the top into the drip after a sand or disc filter. Periodic chlorine or acid treatment of the drip line and frequent flushing also help keep emitters open. Get the water tested for iron, EC, pH, and other salts so you know the full picture. Confirm treatment with your micro irrigation supplier or KVK before investing.
The aeration tank really works. I let the water splash into an open tank and sit overnight, the reddish stuff settles at the bottom, and I pump the clear water from the top into the drip. My emitter clogging dropped a lot once I stopped sending the fresh red water straight into the lines.
Get the water tested before you spend on any treatment. Mine looked rusty but the lab showed only iron, no salinity, so a simple settling tank was enough. A neighbour assumed his was just iron but it also had high salts, which needed a different approach. The test tells you what you are actually dealing with.
Clean the bottom of your settling tank regularly, otherwise the iron sludge builds up and starts going back into the water. I scrape mine out every few weeks. Also flush the drip ends weekly because some iron still gets through and slowly coats the emitters.
