Fertigation tank compatibility, calcium nitrate vs phosphate and sulphate, avoiding precipitation.

The main rule is to keep calcium sources away from phosphate and sulphate sources, because calcium nitrate mixed with phosphates or sulphates forms insoluble precipitates that clog emitters. So calcium nitrate goes in its own tank or is injected at a different time, while urea, potassium nitrate, MAP, mono potassium phosphate, and 19:19:19 are generally compatible together. Magnesium sulphate should also be kept separate from phosphate sources. Use only fully water soluble grades, dissolve them well, and do a small jar test by mixing the two solutions and watching for cloudiness before scaling up. Inject in the middle third of the irrigation and flush with clean water afterward. Get a crop specific schedule and compatibility chart from your fertigation supplier or KVK and do not over apply.

The jar test saved my emitters. I mixed two solutions in a clear bottle and within minutes it went milky white, which told me they were not compatible. Now I never put a new combination into the main tank without testing a glass of it first. Takes two minutes.

I keep calcium nitrate in a separate tank and inject it on a different day from my phosphate feeds, just like the team says. The one time I got lazy and mixed them, the lines clogged with a chalky muck that was a nightmare to clean. Keeping them apart is far easier than cleaning afterwards.

Always flush the system with plain water after fertigating. Leftover fertiliser sitting in warm lines grows slime and scale. I run clean water for a few minutes at the end of every fertigation and my emitters stay much cleaner than my neighbour's who skips this step.

Magnesium sulphate I keep away from the phosphate feed too, not just calcium. I mixed them once and got a cloudy mess that gummed up the filter. Now any new pair gets a clear bottle jar test for a few minutes before it goes near the main tank.
