What does available nitrogen 'low' on the Soil Health Card mean for my urea dose?

A 'low' available nitrogen rating means your soil supplies little N on its own, so the card's recommended nitrogen dose for your crop will be on the higher side of the range, but you should still split it rather than dump it all at once. The standard soil N test (alkaline permanganate) is only a rough guide because soil nitrogen changes fast with moisture and microbes, so the back of the card already factors your status into the kg per acre figure. Apply only part of the nitrogen as basal and the rest as 2 to 3 top dressings matched to crop growth stage, which cuts losses and improves uptake. Add organic matter to build a steady N supply over time. Follow the dose on your Soil Health Card and adjust with your KVK; do not over apply urea.

Almost every card I have seen in our area says nitrogen low. That is normal because soil nitrogen does not stay put. The real win for me came from splitting the urea into three doses and watering right after each top dressing so it goes in instead of flying off.

Do not read low nitrogen as a signal to pour on extra urea. I overdid it one year chasing dark green leaves and got lodging and more pests. Sticking to the card range and adding FYM gave steadier results than piling on bags.

One practice that helped me read the crop instead of just the bag is using a leaf colour chart at top dressing time. If the leaves are already a good green you can hold back the next urea split. It saved me close to a bag without any yield loss. Ask your KVK if they have one.

Adding FYM every year quietly cut my urea need over time, because the soil started supplying more nitrogen on its own. The card still says low, but my crop holds green longer on less urea than it used to. Organic matter is the slow background supply.
