Quality tea leaf comes from fine plucking of two leaves and a bud, which factories pay more for than coarse plucking of three or more leaves with hard stalk. The plucking round, the gap between pluckings, is usually about 7 to 10 days in the active growing season so the shoots are at the right tender stage each time, longer in slow growth periods. Plucking too late gives coarse banjhi shoots and lowers grade, too frequent stresses the bush. Keep a level plucking table by light skiffing so shoots flush evenly. The exact round and standard depend on weather and your factory norms, so confirm with your bought leaf factory and the Tea Board or your local advisory.

Our factory rejects coarse leaf with hard stalk, so I trained my pluckers to take only two leaves and a bud. The fine leaf rate is clearly higher, and a steady round keeps the table even.

In the peak flush I keep a tighter round, around a week, so the shoots do not turn coarse before I get to them. When I stretched the round in the busy season the leaf went hard and the grade fell.
