How to control sweet potato weevil and protect tubers from damage?

The sweet potato weevil is the most serious pest; the grubs tunnel into vines and tubers and the damage makes tubers bitter and unfit to eat even at low infestation. Manage it by using clean, weevil free planting material, practising crop rotation away from sweet potato, and earthing up ridges so cracks do not expose tubers for egg laying. Remove and destroy crop residue and volunteer plants after harvest, and use pheromone traps to monitor and trap male weevils. Avoid leaving mature tubers in the field too long, as longer exposure increases attack. Confirm trap use and any approved treatment with your KVK, since weevil pressure varies by area.

A caution: do not leave mature tubers in the field too long. The longer I left them the more weevil damage I got, harvesting on time and clearing residue afterwards helped.

A point: I always use clean, weevil free planting material and rotate away from sweet potato. Carrying weevils in on old vines was how my first infestation started.
