How does cotton grading by staple length and trash affect the price I get (kapas)?

Buyers keep talking about staple length and trash content when fixing my cotton price. How does grading work and how can I get a better rate?

Cotton price depends heavily on staple length, micronaire, strength, and how much trash and moisture the lot carries, since spinning mills pay more for clean, longer staple lint. Longer staple medium and long varieties generally fetch better rates than short staple, and contamination with leaf, soil, or mixing of varieties pulls the price down. To grade well, pick only fully opened bolls, keep the cotton dry, avoid mixing pickings of different quality, and keep out plastic, hair, and field trash. Storing in clean cloth rather than plastic sacks also reduces contamination. For the staple class of your variety and quality based price, check with the ginning buyer and the Cotton Corporation of India or your local mandi.

Once I started keeping each picking separate and removing dry leaves before bagging, the trader stopped cutting my rate so much. Clean cotton really does sell better.

A big mistake I used to make was picking damp cotton early in the morning when the dew was still there. The moisture lowers the rate and can heat up the heap. Now I pick after the dew dries and the buyer's moisture cut almost disappeared.

Picking in the right rounds helped my grade, because the first good pickings are cleaner and longer than the last trashy ones. I keep the clean early pickings separate and sell them on their own, and the trader paid more for those than for a mixed lot.

Contamination is the silent rate killer. Even a few pieces of plastic thread from old sacks or hair from the picking cloth can downgrade a whole lot. We switched to cotton cloth bags and told the labour to keep plastic away from the heap, and the buyer noticed the cleaner lot.

Training the picking labour mattered more than I expected. When they pulled whole bolls with bits of leaf and bract it added trash, so I asked them to pick only the clean lint from fully opened bolls. The buyer's trash cut came down once the picking was cleaner.

Keeping the heap covered and off the damp floor in the store stopped the moisture and dirt that were pulling my rate down. A clean dry lint holds its colour and the buyer does not cut for moisture or staining. Confirm the moisture norms with your buyer or the CCI centre before you bring the lot.
