agri insurance beyond PMFBY livestock insurance weather based crop scheme

Beyond the main crop insurance scheme PMFBY, farmers can protect other risks through livestock and weather based products. Livestock insurance, supported under the central Livestock Health and Disease Control programme and state schemes, covers cattle, buffalo, goats, sheep and sometimes poultry against death from disease or accident, usually with the animal tagged and a vet certificate, and premium is partly subsidised. Weather based crop insurance pays out when measured weather like rainfall, temperature or humidity crosses a set trigger, which suits crops where weather, not just yield, drives loss, and it is offered for many horticulture crops. There are also poultry, fishery and farm asset or pump set insurance products from general insurers. To enrol, livestock insurance goes through your veterinary department or insurer, and crop linked covers through banks at loan time. Confirm current premium, subsidy and coverage terms with your bank, vet office or insurer before paying.
I insured my two buffaloes through the vet department. They tag the animal in the ear, that tag is must for any claim, do not let it fall off. When one died of disease the claim went through with the vet certificate. Premium had a subsidy so it was affordable.
For my mango orchard I took weather based insurance because untimely rain spoils flowering. It pays on rainfall data, not on my actual field loss, so read the trigger conditions carefully. Some years it paid, some not, depending on the weather station readings.
I added a pump set insurance after a voltage surge burnt my motor, it covered most of the repair. Small covers like this are cheap and worth it. Keep the purchase bill of the motor, the insurer asked for it during the claim.
For poultry I took a cover through a general insurer because one disease outbreak can wipe out a whole batch. The premium depends on the number of birds, ask for the exact rate before you commit. Report any death quickly, late intimation got my neighbour's claim reduced.
A practical step, take the photo of the tag and the animal together when you insure, and again if it dies, with the date visible. The vet certificate plus these photos made my buffalo claim smooth. Renew on time, a lapsed policy means no cover when you need it most.
