Shree Anna is the government branding for millets introduced in the Union Budget 2023-24, covering bajra, jowar, ragi and small millets like foxtail, kodo and little millet. The year 2023 was declared the International Year of Millets by the United Nations on India's proposal, which boosted awareness and demand. The mission supports research, processing, branding and marketing of millets, with the aim of positioning India as a global hub for millets and improving farmer incomes. For growers, the practical benefits are higher demand, better prices for clean graded grain, support for value addition like flour, malt and ready mixes, and inclusion of millets in some government nutrition schemes. Check state level millet schemes, procurement and FPO support with your agriculture department.

After the 2023 millet year the city demand for ragi, jowar and bajra products really jumped. Our FPO started selling millet flour and mixes and we got a better rate than selling raw grain.

The awareness helped most. Earlier nobody wanted small millets, now there are buyers and processing units coming up. Selling through a group gives better bargaining power.

Many states run their own millet schemes on top of the central mission. In Odisha the millet mission gave us seed and helped with procurement, so ask your block office what your own state offers. The benefit is not the same everywhere.

Do not expect a magic price just because of the branding. The extra money comes when you clean, grade and where possible process the grain. Plain raw grain dumped at the heap still gets a low rate, branding or not.

Millets going into the ration and midday meal in some states has opened a steady buyer. Our women's group supplies ragi to a local scheme. Ask your panchayat if any nearby institution is buying millets under such programmes.
