Is it safe to store grain in plastic or jute sacks directly on the floor?

I usually stack my grain sacks directly on the godown floor. Someone said this causes spoilage. Is that true and what should I do instead?

Yes, stacking sacks directly on the floor is a common cause of avoidable spoilage. Floors, especially concrete, draw up moisture from the ground, and the bottom bags absorb it, leading to damp, mouldy, caked grain and a musty smell that fails quality checks. Direct floor contact also makes it easy for insects and rats to reach the grain and hides damp damage until it has spread. The fix is simple: stack bags on raised wooden or plastic pallets a few inches off the floor so air can move underneath, and keep the stack away from walls, which can also be damp, leaving a gap to inspect and to let air circulate. Make sure the grain inside is already dried to safe moisture before bagging, because dry grain in a good sack keeps far better. Choose breathable jute or proper grain bags, or hermetic liners inside sacks for insect-free storage, depending on your need; sealing damp grain in plastic only traps moisture and causes rot. Keep the store clean, dry, leak-free and rat-proofed. These small changes in how you stack protect a surprising amount of grain. Confirm storage practice and safe moisture with your local agriculture office.

My bottom bags always spoiled until I put them on wooden pallets. Now the whole stack stays dry.

Leaving a gap from the wall also helped me spot a damp patch early before it ruined the bags.
