How do I clean and prepare an empty grain bin before storing new grain?

Cleaning the empty store before refilling is one of the most overlooked but important steps, because most fresh infestations come from insects and eggs left behind in last year's residue and cracks. Empty out every bit of old grain, dust and webbing, since even a handful of leftover grain in a corner can reseed a whole new infestation. Brush and sweep walls, floor, corners, lids and seams, then where possible wash and dry the container fully, because damp leftover moisture causes mould later. Pay special attention to cracks, joints and the underside of lids where insects hide and pupate. Keep new grain away from old, possibly infested grain; never tip fresh harvest on top of leftover stock. Repair any holes that let in rats or moisture, and store on raised pallets off a damp floor. Only fill the cleaned, dry bin with properly dried, clean new grain, and seal it well. This simple sanitation, done every season before filling, dramatically lowers insect problems without any chemical.
