I want to dry my grain and some vegetables and chillies properly before storage. Is solar drying better than open sun drying and how do I do it?

Drying is the foundation of safe storage, and both open sun drying and solar dryers can work; the difference is control and cleanliness. Open sun drying on a clean sheet or pucca floor is cheap and effective for grain, but the produce is exposed to dust, birds, rain showers, and uneven drying. A solar dryer, which is a simple structure with a transparent cover that traps heat and lets moisture escape, dries faster, keeps out dust, birds and rain, gives better colour for things like chilli, and protects quality and food safety. For grain, spread it thinly, turn it for even drying, and dry to the safe moisture for that crop before cooling and sealing in airtight storage. For chillies, fruit slices and leafy produce, a covered solar dryer usually gives cleaner, better-coloured, less mouldy product than open ground drying, which matters a lot for price and for avoiding mould and aflatoxin. Whichever method you use, the goal is the same: reach a safe low moisture, keep it clean, and cool before sealing. Many KVKs and schemes support low cost solar dryers, so ask about designs and any subsidy. Verify the right drying level for each crop with your local agriculture office.

My solar dried chilli keeps a much better red colour than open drying and the buyers notice it.

A solar dryer saved my produce during an unexpected rain when open drying lots all over the village got spoiled.
