How can I manage whitefly organically before it spreads virus?

Whitefly does double damage, it sucks sap and it spreads serious viruses like leaf curl in chilli, tomato and cotton, and no spray cures a plant once it is virus infected, so organic management is all about keeping numbers low from the start. Put up yellow sticky traps early and densely, whitefly is strongly drawn to yellow, both to monitor and to trap adults. Spray neem oil with a little soap on the underside of leaves where whitefly rests, repeated weekly, and use the insect fungus Beauveria in humid weather. Silver or reflective plastic mulch confuses whitefly and reduces landing on the crop, which is a useful preventive in vegetables. Conserve natural enemies by avoiding broad chemical sprays that kill them, remove and destroy heavily infected and virus showing plants quickly so they do not infect the rest, and clear weed hosts around the field. Choosing tolerant varieties and timely sowing to escape the peak whitefly flush also help a lot. Organic methods keep light to moderate whitefly in check, a heavy dry season outbreak with virus is very difficult, so act early and ask your KVK if numbers keep rising.
