My field is waterlogged after heavy rain, how do I save the standing crop?

The first priority is to get the water moving off the field as fast as possible. Cut drainage channels or open the bunds at the low end so standing water can flow out to a drain, field channel, or pond. Most field crops cannot survive many days with roots sitting in water, so every hour the water drains sooner helps. Once the water is off, do not walk or run machinery on the wet soil more than needed, as it compacts it. When the surface dries a little, gently break any crust so air can reach the roots, and watch for yellowing, which is common after waterlogging because the roots were starved of oxygen. A light dose of nitrogen once the field is workable often helps the crop recover its colour, and a foliar spray can give a quick lift, but check the right product and timing for your crop with your KVK. Be alert for root and stem rots and fungal disease that follow waterlogging. If this field floods every monsoon, plan a permanent drainage outlet or raised beds, and confirm options with your agriculture department.
