My drip emitters are clogged with green algae and slime, how do I clear it?

Green algae and slime usually mean organic clogging, which is different from the white salt deposits that need acid. It builds up when surface or pond water carrying algae enters the lines and sits in warm pipes. First, check your filter: a clogged or undersized screen or disc filter lets algae through, so clean the filter element and make sure you actually have one suited to your water. To clear existing slime, flush the system by opening the far ends of the laterals and the sub-main flush valves while the pump runs, until clean water comes out. A chlorine treatment, normally a dose of household bleach injected to give a low residual chlorine at the far end for a short contact time and then flushed out, is the common way to kill the algae, but get the exact dose and contact time from your drip dealer or KVK because too much can harm the line and crop. Going forward, keep pond or tank water covered or shaded, run a proper filter, flush the lines on a regular schedule, and do not leave water standing in hot pipes. Confirm the chlorine dose and method with your dealer or KVK before you do it.
