How to use the stale seedbed method to reduce weeds?

The stale seedbed (also called false seedbed) is a simple, low-cost cultural method that reduces weeds before you sow your crop, and it is especially useful in DSR and other crops with heavy early weed flushes. The idea is to let a flush of weeds germinate first, kill them, and then sow into the cleaned bed so the crop starts with much lower weed pressure. To do it, prepare the field to a fine seedbed as if for sowing, then irrigate or wait for rain so the moisture triggers weed seeds in the top soil to germinate. Let the weeds come up over about a week or two. Then kill that flush without deep disturbance, either with a shallow, light cultivation or a non-selective knockdown herbicide used before sowing, taking care not to bring up fresh weed seeds from deeper down. Now sow your crop into the stale bed. Because you have already removed the first big flush from the surface seed bank, the crop faces far fewer weeds early on. It does not replace in-crop weed control but it lightens the load a lot and can reduce reliance on selective herbicides. If you use any herbicide for the knockdown, use one allowed for pre-sowing use, follow the label, and check with your KVK.
