How do I correct zinc deficiency and can I just mix zinc with my fertiliser?

Zinc deficiency is common on many Indian soils and is corrected with zinc sulphate, applied either to the soil or as a foliar spray, depending on severity and timing. For soil application, zinc sulphate is usually applied at sowing and worked into the soil. An important caution: do not mix zinc sulphate together with DAP in the same band or close contact, because phosphorus and zinc can react and reduce zinc availability; keep them separated. For a quick correction on a standing crop showing deficiency, a foliar spray of zinc sulphate (with the recommended quantity and a neutraliser as advised on the label) gives a faster response. Confirm it really is zinc deficiency, ideally from a soil test or expert diagnosis of the leaf pattern, before spending on it. Apply foliar sprays in the cool hours with good leaf coverage. Follow the product label and your KVK advice for the exact rate and method, base it on your Soil Health Card or soil test, and do not over-apply, since excess zinc is also a problem.
