How do I set up fertigation through my existing drip system?

I have drip in my vegetable field and want to start giving fertiliser through it instead of broadcasting. What do I need to add and how do I run it?

Fertigation means delivering dissolved fertiliser through your drip water, so nutrients go straight to the root zone in small, frequent, controlled doses. To run it on an existing drip system you need a way to inject fertiliser into the line. Common options are a venturi injector, a fertiliser tank with bypass, or a dosing pump for larger setups. Use only water-soluble fertilisers that dissolve fully and will not clog the emitters; ordinary granular DAP and some other products do not suit fertigation. A good operating routine is: run plain water first to wet the system, then inject the dissolved fertiliser solution for the main part of the irrigation, then run plain water again at the end to flush the lines so salts do not build up and block emitters. Filter your water well, dissolve fertilisers properly, and check emitter flow regularly. Split the crop's nutrient requirement into many small fertigation doses across the growth stages rather than a few big ones. For which fertilisers and what schedule suit your specific crop, follow your KVK or a drip company agronomist, base the total dose on your Soil Health Card or soil test, and do not over-apply.

A simple venturi worked fine for my plot to begin with. Just remember to flush with clean water at the end every time or the drippers choke.

Only water soluble grades for me now. I tried normal fertiliser once and it blocked half my emitters.

Little and often is the real benefit. The plants get a steady feed instead of one shock dose.
