What is the right NPK dose and how to use balanced fertiliser?

The right NPK dose depends on your crop, variety, yield target, and soil test, so there is no single number; always start from your Soil Health Card recommendation. Practice balanced fertilisation rather than over-using urea: many Indian fields are skewed far from the ideal 4:2:1 NPK ratio because farmers apply too much nitrogen and too little potash, sulphur, and micronutrients. Follow the 4R principle: Right source, Right rate, Right time, and Right place. Apply full phosphorus and potash plus part of nitrogen as basal, and split the rest of nitrogen into 2 to 3 top dressings. Add zinc, sulphur, or boron only if the soil test shows deficiency. This raises yield and cuts input cost.

For years I judged a crop by how much urea I put on. Once I added potash and a little sulphur as the card suggested, the same field gave fuller grain and the plants stood up better against wind.

Don't read the fertiliser bag grades as the same thing as nutrient kg. A bag of DAP is mostly phosphorus with some nitrogen, not a balanced food. Working from the nutrient figures on my Soil Health Card, not the bag name, stopped me from over-spending on the wrong product.

Placing fertiliser near the root zone instead of broadcasting on top made a clear difference for me, especially for phosphorus, which does not move much in soil. That is the Right place part of the 4R idea.

A diagnostic habit that helps: walk the field and note where the crop is paler or shorter, then match it to soil patches. Sometimes a deficiency is only in one zone and a blanket extra dose everywhere just wastes money.

I keep a simple diary of what I applied and the yield each season per plot. Over a few years it told me which doses actually paid back and which were just habit, which is more useful than any single recommendation.

Whatever the plan, get the basal phosphorus and potash in at sowing, since topping them up late helps far less. And do not push nitrogen beyond the card figure chasing greener leaves; it invites lodging and pests. Adjust to your soil test and local KVK and do not over-apply.
