What free help does a KVK provide?

A Krishi Vigyan Kendra, KVK, is one of the most useful free resources for a small farmer, and most of its core services cost you nothing. A KVK is the district level farm science centre under the agricultural research system, and its job is to bring new, tested technology to your field. The free help usually includes: practical training on crops, livestock, horticulture and allied activities; on farm demonstrations so you can see a new variety or practice working in real conditions before you invest; advice on pest, disease and nutrient problems; soil and sometimes water testing guidance; weather based advisories; and information on improved seeds and planting material, some of which the KVK itself produces and sells at modest rates. Many KVKs run mobile or SMS advisories you can subscribe to. To use it, simply visit the KVK in your district, tell the scientist your crop and problem, and ask about upcoming trainings and demonstrations. Training and advice are generally free; you only pay if you buy seed, planting material or a soil test where a small charge applies.
