How does the Soil Health Card actually save me money on fertiliser?

The saving is real and comes from stopping waste. Most farmers apply the same fixed dose of urea and DAP every year out of habit, regardless of what the soil already holds. But soils differ, and many fields already have enough or even surplus phosphorus and potassium built up from years of past application. The card tells you exactly where you are over-applying so you can cut those bags without losing yield. For example, if your phosphorus is marked high, you can reduce or skip DAP and save that cost. If potassium is sufficient, you cut potash. If a micronutrient is already fine, you do not buy it. At the same time, where something is genuinely low, like zinc or sulphur, the card lets you add a small correct dose that actually lifts yield, so you spend the right money in the right place. So it saves both ways, less wasted fertiliser and better response from what you do apply. Over a few seasons this adds up to a real reduction in your input bill, and over-applied fertiliser can also harm the crop and soil, which the card helps you avoid. Follow your card dose and confirm with your KVK rather than the old blanket habit, and do not over-apply.
