The common PM-KUSUM mistakes from application to after sales, from buying outside the empanelled list to oversizing, and how to protect your subsidy and warranty.

Most PM-KUSUM problems come from a handful of avoidable mistakes, and knowing them upfront protects both your subsidy and your money. The first and most damaging is buying or installing a pump outside the official process, that is, from a dealer who is not on the empanelled list or before you get the work order, because in most states the subsidy is only released for an approved vendor and an approved sequence, so install first or buy outside and you can lose the subsidy entirely. The second is oversizing the pump to be safe, which raises the benchmark and therefore your farmer share and any loan, while a solar pump on a weak bore cannot use that extra capacity anyway, so match the HP to your real bore yield and head. The third is document mismatch, the name differing across land record, Aadhaar and bank account, or a stale or jointly held land record without consent, which is a leading rejection reason, so fix all three names and get a current record before applying. The fourth is paying advances to anyone claiming to be a KUSUM agent without verifying them against the official list, since touts target this scheme. The fifth is neglecting the after sales side, not keeping the work order and warranty terms, not cleaning the panels, and not logging faults with the vendor and then the nodal agency during the maintenance period, which is how people end up paying for repairs that were actually covered. If you apply through the official portal, stay within the empanelled list and the approved sequence, size honestly, keep your documents clean and your paperwork safe, and use the grievance route when a vendor goes quiet, you avoid almost all the common losses. Confirm the current portal, empanelled list and process for your state with the nodal agency, since the specifics vary.

My biggest lesson was not to install before the work order. A neighbour bought and fitted a pump on his own thinking the subsidy would come later, and it never did because the vendor was not empanelled. Follow the official sequence.

Oversizing got me a bigger bill for nothing the first time I enquired. The surveyor later put me on a smaller HP that matched my bore and it works fine and cost me less.

A so called agent asked for an advance in our village. I checked the nodal list and his firm was not on it. Never pay anyone before verifying against the official empanelled list.

Keep the work order and warranty paper safe and clean the panels. I logged a controller fault with the vendor in writing within the maintenance years and it was replaced free. Without that paper I would have paid.
