PM-KUSUM works within defined capacity bands rather than letting you pick any size. For standalone and solarised pumps under Components B and C, the pumps are offered in standard HP bands, commonly from around 3 HP up to about 10 HP, and the subsidy benchmark is set for each band, so your choice is among those standard sizes that suit your bore. For Component A, the small ground mounted plants fall within a capacity range set by the scheme, sized to be small decentralised plants connected at the local grid, not large utility projects. The limits exist for good reasons: the benchmark cost and subsidy are calculated per band, the grid at your point can only absorb so much in the Component A and C export cases, and the scheme is aimed at decentralised farm scale solar rather than big plants. The practical point for a pump applicant is to choose the band that matches your real head, bore yield and area, since going a band higher than needed only increases your share. For a Component A applicant, the viable capacity is shaped by your land size and what the local grid can take. The exact HP bands offered, the Component A capacity range, and any state specific upper limit vary by state and tender cycle, so confirm the current capacity options and limits on your state PM-KUSUM portal before deciding.
