For most needs a correctly sized PM-KUSUM solar pump runs your borewell well, but it behaves differently from a diesel or grid pump, so it helps to set expectations. The biggest difference is that a solar pump runs on sunlight, so it works strongly in the bright middle of the day, ramps up and down with the sun, and does not run at night or in heavy cloud unless you have battery or grid backup, which standalone Component B pumps usually do not. That means you plan irrigation around daylight hours rather than pumping whenever you like. The second point is head and discharge. A solar pump is matched to a particular head, so if your water table is very deep or your bore yield is weak, the right approach is to size the pump to that real head and discharge rather than expecting the same flood flow you got from an oversized diesel set. When matched correctly to the bore, a solar pump gives steady daytime water without fuel cost or electricity bills, which is its big advantage over diesel, and it avoids the unreliable night supply that grid pumps often suffer. Where farmers feel disappointed is when the pump was sized for a shallower bore than they actually have, or when they expected night running. So tell the surveyor your true standing water level, bore yield and irrigated area, and accept that the routine is daytime irrigation. It runs best from late morning to mid afternoon. I shifted my irrigation to those hours and it works fine. No diesel cost is the real win.
