PM-KUSUM solar pumps are offered in standard capacity bands, commonly from around 3 HP up to about 10 HP, with both surface and submersible options. The right size depends mainly on three things: how deep your water sits, how much you need to lift it, and how much area and what crop you irrigate. A shallow open well or a high water table needs far less power than a deep submersible borewell where the water level is many metres down, because most of the energy goes into lifting against head. As a rough guide, small holdings on shallow water often manage with 3 to 5 HP, while deeper borewells or larger areas push you towards 7.5 HP or higher. The trap to avoid is oversizing for safety. Since your farmer share is a percentage of the benchmark cost and a bigger pump has a bigger benchmark, jumping one band higher than needed directly raises the rupees you pay, and a solar pump only runs in daylight anyway, so an oversized pump on a weak bore just draws air. The best approach is to tell the vendor or nodal office your borewell depth, the standing water level, the discharge your bore actually gives, and your irrigated area, and let them size it to your real water yield rather than picking the biggest available. Confirm the capacity bands offered in your state on the PM-KUSUM portal, since not every state offers every HP.
I almost took 7.5 HP on advice of a neighbour but my bore only gives a modest discharge, so the surveyor put me on 5 HP and it is plenty. The extra HP would just have cost me more for nothing.
Tell them your actual standing water level, not the total bore depth. That is what decides the head and the right pump.
Remember it only runs in daylight, so do not size as if it pumps all day and night. A right sized pump in the sun hours did my whole field comfortably.
