want to produce my own onion seed, how does the bulb to seed crop work and when

Onion seed is produced by the bulb to seed method, which is a two stage crop. First grow good bulbs in the normal rabi season, then select healthy true to type medium bulbs of your variety, cure and store them, and replant these selected mother bulbs in October to November. The replanted bulbs send up flower stalks (umbels) that flower and set seed, which matures by around March to April. Isolation from other onion varieties is essential to keep the seed pure, since onions cross pollinate by insects. Bee activity helps pollination and seed set. Harvest umbels as they turn and dry, then thresh and clean. Onion seed loses viability fast, so store it cool and dry. Confirm the recommended method and variety with your KVK or a seed agency.
Selecting the right mother bulbs of one pure variety and keeping isolation distance is everything for clean onion seed. If another variety flowers nearby the bees mix it and your seed is no longer true.
Remember onion seed does not keep long, sow it the next season. Bees really help the seed set, my isolated plot near my mango trees set seed much better with the bee activity.
