Nagpur mandarin (santra) is best planted at the start of the monsoon, around June to August, so young saplings establish with natural rain, with some growers also planting in a mild post monsoon window under irrigation. Use healthy, certified, virus free saplings on a suitable rootstock to avoid bringing in disease. Common spacing is around 6 by 6 metres, adjusted for your soil and management. Make good sized pits, mix in well rotted manure, and ensure drainage since santra hates waterlogging. The orchard takes a few years to come into proper bearing, so plan intercrops in the early years. Confirm the recommended rootstock, spacing and planting material source with your KVK or the citrus research station before buying.

Buy your santra saplings only from a reliable certified nursery. Cheap roadside plants brought greening into a relative's orchard and it never recovered. Drainage is also key, ours died in the low waterlogged corner.

We intercrop in the early years before the trees bear, otherwise the land sits idle for a long time. Plant at monsoon onset so the young trees get free rain water to settle.
