Beetroot is a cool season root crop, so the main sowing is from September to November in the plains, with some growers in mild areas extending it. Hot weather gives poor root colour and woody texture. Detroit Dark Red and similar globe types are widely grown and accepted in the market for their deep colour. Sow seed directly in lines on well prepared, stone free soil so roots grow straight, and thin the seedlings to give each root room to size up. The crop is ready in roughly two to three months. Confirm the recommended variety and exact sowing window for your area with the local horticulture office or your KVK.

Thinning is important, if you leave them crowded the roots stay small and ugly. Detroit Dark Red gives the deep colour the market wants here in Kolar.

Soft, well worked soil without clods gives smooth round roots. On hard cloddy soil my beetroot came out forked and twisted, which the buyer did not like.
