want to avoid the usual mistakes that make nursery businesses fail before I invest

Nursery failures usually come from a handful of causes. The biggest is weak marketing, growing plants well but not having steady buyers, so stock ages, outgrows its pots, and becomes unsaleable. Others are poor plant quality from disease, damping off in seedlings, or bad propagation that loses customer trust; overproduction of slow-moving plants tying up money and space; underestimating the labour and daily care plants need; water and irrigation failures; and seasonal cash flow gaps where money goes out months before sales come in. Some also fail by choosing plants their local market does not want, like ornamentals in a pure farming area. Plants are perishable working capital, an unsold plant keeps costing money and eventually dies. Protect yourself by lining up buyers before you produce, growing to demand rather than guessing, keeping strict hygiene against seedling disease, and holding enough working capital for the cash flow gap. Start with proven, fast-selling lines and expand only what actually sells. Talk to established nursery owners about their real challenges before you begin.
I overproduced ornamentals one year and they outgrew the pots before selling, total loss on that lot. Grow to orders and demand, not to fill space.
Damping off wiped a big seedling batch early on for me. Hygiene, clean trays and good medium fixed it. Do not be careless with seedling health.
