Is red rice worth growing and what is the demand and price like?

Red rice is a pigmented rice traditionally grown in Kerala, Karnataka, the north east, Tamil Nadu and other regions, with well known types like Kerala matta and various local landraces, and it has a steady health and traditional food market. Demand is genuine and growing among health conscious buyers, but the premium over ordinary rice is moderate, not huge, and it depends on the variety, region and buyer. There is generally no special MSP for specialty red rice. Many traditional red rice varieties yield less than modern white paddy, so a modest premium has to offset lower grain. The honest picture is that red rice is a reasonable specialty crop with a real but limited premium, best grown where the variety is locally valued or where you have a health food or export buyer.
