Buckwheat is a low input crop suited to marginal hill land where little else grows well, but yields are modest, commonly in the range of about 3 to 6 quintal per acre. Its value is that it is short duration, tolerates poor soil, fills a gap in the cropping calendar, and has a guaranteed if seasonal fasting market. It is not a high income crop, so judge it as a useful crop for marginal land and the festival market rather than a money spinner. The honest position is that you grow kuttu because the land and season suit it and there is a known demand, not because the price is high. Pair it with milling or FPO selling if you want better returns, and confirm the recommended variety and practice with your KVK.

On land where nothing much else grows, kuttu gives me something in a short time. Modest yield but it fits the gap and the fasting market always buys.
