Grain amaranth, called rajgira or ramdana, is a hardy crop that tolerates heat, drought and poorer soils, which makes it good for dryland and hill farmers. It is grown in the hills of Uttarakhand and Himachal, and in the plains of Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat and the south, in different seasons depending on region, often rabi in the plains and the warm season in the hills. The seed is very small so sowing is shallow with a low seed rate, often after mixing seed with sand for even spread. It does not like waterlogging.
