Arecanut gardens are well suited to intercropping because the tall palms leave space and partial shade. Common and profitable intercrops are cocoa, black pepper trained on the areca palms as live standards, and banana, while cardamom and some other shade crops also work in suitable areas. Pepper is popular because it uses the palm as support without extra land, and cocoa fills the shaded ground. These intercrops give steady extra income and help carry you through the years before the palms pay and through arecanut price dips. Make sure intercrops do not compete too much for water and nutrients, so feed and irrigate the whole garden adequately. Pepper on the areca palms and cocoa below is the classic combination here. The pepper and cocoa income often matters as much as the supari, especially when supari rates are low.

Just remember the intercrops also need water and feeding. If you only feed the supari the pepper and cocoa will not yield. Manage the whole garden together.
