High curcumin turmeric earns a premium because oleoresin and nutraceutical buyers pay for curcumin percentage. Lakadong turmeric from the Jaintia Hills of Meghalaya is famous for very high curcumin, often reported in the high single digit percentages, which is well above ordinary turmeric, while Salem and certain improved varieties also give good curcumin and bold rhizomes. The best choice depends on your soil, altitude and buyer, Lakadong does best in its Meghalaya hill conditions and there are efforts to keep its identity and GI status. If you are in its home belt, Lakadong fetches a strong premium. Elsewhere, improved high curcumin varieties suited to your area may perform more reliably. Get a curcumin test done on your produce and confirm the right variety and seed source with your KVK, since buyers pay on tested curcumin.

Lakadong in our hills genuinely tests high in curcumin and buyers come looking for it. But it performs best here, a friend who took the rhizomes to a warmer place did not get the same high curcumin.

Get the curcumin tested. The oleoresin factory paid me extra once I had a test report showing high curcumin. Without proof you just get the normal mandi rate.

In the plains I grow a high yielding improved variety instead of Lakadong because it gives more rhizome and decent curcumin for my soil. Lakadong is best left to the Meghalaya hills where it really shines.
