Selling mentha oil, finding genuine buyers and agents, avoiding cheating on weight quality and price, volatile mentha oil market, getting terms clear.

The mentha oil market runs through traders, agents and processing companies, and because the oil is high-value and the price swings sharply, it is an area where growers can get short-changed on weight, quality testing or price, so go in carefully. Practical protections: deal with established, traceable buyers or your cooperative rather than an unknown agent who appeared overnight; know the current market oil rate before you sell so you are not quoted a low figure (the price is volatile, so check it close to your sale date, not from an old number); insist on transparent weighing and, where quality is tested, understand how the test affects your rate; and get the agreed price, quantity, quality basis and payment timing in writing or at least on a clear written record, not just verbal. Beware anyone promising an unusually high fixed price or pressuring you to sell immediately. Talk to other growers and your distillation unit operator about who pays fairly and on time. If a buyback or contract is offered, verify the company is real and get full written terms covering price, rejection and payment. The oil itself is genuine value; the risk is in the selling, so treat the transaction with the same care as the farming, and never rely on a single verbal promise.
I always check the running oil rate before selling, the price changes so much that an agent will quote you low if you do not know it. And I sell to a buyer others have used and got paid by.
Get the weight and rate written down at the still itself. A verbal deal with a new agent is asking for trouble in this trade.
