Is plum a profitable early fruit and how should I market its perishable crop?

Plum ripens early and does not keep long. Is it profitable per acre, and how should I market such a perishable fruit to get good rates? Income ranges please, no hype.

Plum can be a good early-summer earner because it ripens in a window with limited competing quality fruit, so well-graded fresh plums fetch attractive rates, and low-chill plums let growers in the plains and lower hills join this market. It also bears fairly young. But plum is highly perishable with a short shelf life, so marketing speed decides profitability. Per-acre income once mature depends on yield, fruit size and grade, and how fast you can sell; after costs of pruning, thinning, brown-rot and aphid control, harvesting and quick marketing, a good year gives good margins, especially for large, well-coloured fruit sold fresh and local. To market it well: harvest at proper firm-mature stage, grade strictly by size and colour, cool fruit quickly, pack in ventilated trays to avoid bruising, and sell fast to nearby premium and online buyers rather than holding stock. Surplus or soft fruit can go for jam, squash or dried prune-type products. Risks are frost at flowering, rain and rots, and the short shelf life. Confirm current local plum rates and input costs before projecting, and do not rely on best-year figures.

Plum sells well early but you must move it fast, it does not wait. I sell to nearby markets and online the same day I pick, holding it loses money.

Soft and surplus plums I turn into jam and squash, which adds some income instead of throwing them away. Grading the good ones gets the better fresh rate.
