The main quality problems in fig are fruit splitting and rot from rain or uneven moisture at ripening, fruit fly and fruit borer, fig rust and leaf spots that defoliate the plant, birds, and stem borers. The most important quality lever is timing the crop through bahar management so the fruit ripens in dry weather and avoiding heavy irrigation swings, because erratic moisture and rain at ripening cause splitting and rot. Keep the orchard open and airy by pruning, remove and destroy fallen and rotten fruit and dropped leaves for sanitation, and use fruit fly traps to monitor and reduce the pest. For fig rust and leaf spots, good airflow and timely action help. Birds can take a real toll near ripening, so netting on valuable blocks may pay. If a spray is needed, use only labelled products, follow the dose and pre harvest interval, and take the current recommendation from your KVK rather than spraying on guesswork, since it is an edible fresh fruit. Confirm the schedule locally.

Rust defoliated our plants one humid year and the next crop suffered. Keeping the canopy open and clearing fallen leaves helped. The big enemy is rain on ripening fruit, which is why we manage bahar to ripen in the dry months.

Birds were eating a lot of our best fruit until we netted the block. Fruit fly traps also cut down the maggoty fruit. Sanitation, picking up the drops, makes a real difference.
