Value addition means doing something to your produce so it sells for more than the raw crop, and a small farmer can start with simple, low cost steps. The easiest is cleaning, grading and good packing, which lifts price with little equipment. Next come simple processing steps that suit your crop: drying or dehydrating, making flour or dal from grain and pulses, basic spice grinding and packing, jaggery from cane, pickles, or simple fruit products. Branding and clean labelled packs build trust and let you sell direct to consumers, shops or online, where the margin is better than selling raw to a trader. Start small with the step you can do well, sell it, and grow from there rather than buying big machinery upfront. Two things to plan early: if you make food products for sale you will usually need FSSAI registration or a licence depending on scale, and you should know your market and the premium before investing. Subsidy support may be available through food processing schemes and the Agriculture Infrastructure Fund. Verify FSSAI requirements and available subsidy with your district industries centre, agriculture office and a bank before scaling up.

We started making and packing turmeric powder from our own crop. The branded pack sells for far more than selling raw turmeric to the trader. We got the FSSAI registration first.

Begin with one product and one good label. I tried too many things at once first and it scattered my effort. Focus paid off better.
