Typical cold storage rental basis, what it covers and how to compare quotes for stored produce.

Cold storage rent in India is usually charged per bag or per quintal for the season, and the rate varies a lot by crop, region, season length and demand, so I will not quote a fixed figure. Ask the cold store for the rate clearly on the same basis as others so you can compare like for like, because some quote per bag of a fixed weight and others per quintal. Find out exactly what the rent covers: loading and unloading, weighing, the storage period in months, electricity, and whether they charge extra for early withdrawal or part withdrawal. Check the insurance position, who bears weight loss during storage, and whether grading or treatment is included. Also confirm the booking and advance terms, and whether rent is for a full season or month by month. Get two or three written quotes and the agreement terms before you commit. For your local rate and season, verify directly with the cold storage units near you and with your district horticulture or agriculture office.
One thing I learned the hard way: ask about weight loss policy. Produce loses some weight in cold storage and you want to know upfront who bears it.
