What goes into a good drip design, the field information a vendor needs, and how to check the design before buying.

A drip system is only as good as its design, so do not buy off a generic per acre rate without a layout. A proper design starts from your field information: total area and shape, the crop and its row and plant spacing, your water source type (borewell, open well, canal, farm pond), the source yield in litres per hour or the pump discharge, the water quality, and the slope of the land. From that the designer fixes the dripper discharge and spacing, the lateral spacing to match your crop rows, the sub-main and main pipe sizes so pressure stays even from the first plant to the last, the filter type matched to your water, and whether you need pressure compensating drippers on sloping ground. Ask the vendor for a written layout drawing and a bill of material that lists pipe class, dripper type and spacing, and filter size, not just a lump sum. A good sign is that they ask about your water yield and quality before quoting; a vendor who quotes without that is guessing. Empanelled companies under PMKSY usually must submit a design for approval anyway, so insist on seeing it. Confirm the empanelled vendor list and design norms on your state micro irrigation portal.
On sloping land insist on pressure compensating drippers. Without them my lower plants drowned and upper ones starved until I redid it.
Get the layout drawing on paper. When my system underperformed the drawing proved the vendor had used wider lateral spacing than promised and they had to fix it.
Tell them your real borewell yield. Many of us oversize the system for a weak bore and then cannot run all the laterals at once.
