Should I buy a tractor or just hire one for my small farm?

I have only a few acres. Does it make sense to buy a tractor on EMI, or is it cheaper to just hire one each season?

Run a simple cost comparison based on how many hours you really need a tractor each year. Owning makes sense when your annual usage is high enough that the EMI, diesel, maintenance and insurance per year cost less than hiring for those hours, or when timely access matters and hired tractors are not available at your sowing or harvest window. Hiring makes sense when your acreage is small, usage is only a few days a year, and a reliable custom hiring centre is available nearby, because then you avoid the loan burden, depreciation and idle machine cost. Many small farmers do a mix: hire the big seasonal jobs and own only what they use very often, like a small power tiller or a trolley. Add up your yearly tractor hours, compare the hire cost against the full ownership cost (EMI plus running plus maintenance), and decide. Owning a costly machine that sits idle most of the year usually loses money.

For my 3 acres, hiring works out far cheaper than EMI. I keep the money for inputs instead.

I bought because hired tractors were never available on time during sowing. Timely access was worth it for me even on small land.
